CANWARN update

Folks, just an update on this spring's CANWARN training sessions. The season got off to a strong start with good attendance at both the Sarnia and London training sessions run by Randy Mawson earlier this week. A few things to note, there is a slight correction to the address for the April 30th session at the Rama Community Hall, the correct address is 5950 Rama Road. Also, the date for the Ottawa training at the Nepean Sailing Club has been moved from Saturday, May 7th to Saturday, May 14th due to a scheduling conflict. I did receive a good response for holding a Toronto evening training session, so a training session will be held at our headquarters at 4905 Dufferin St. starting at 7 PM on Wednesday, May 18th. In addition, the dates/venues of the training in portions of Northeastern and Northwestern Ontario have been firmed up and are included below.

Thanks to those of you who have already come out to a training session and to those that have RSVP'd me for one of the other sessions. If you haven't already let me know which session you intend to come to, please feel free to drop me a note in the coming days. Also, if you have had a change of contact information (email, phone, address), please feel free to drop me a note with the new information and I will ensure to update our database. JT65 links

Rod VE3SOY did a demo of the JT65 digital mode at last night's meeting. This was the subject of an article by Steve Ford WB8IMY in the April 2011 issue of QST. For more information on JT65, see the JT65-HF project on SourceForge. Although the project page says it's open source, only Windows binaries are currently available. Discussions on the JT65-HF Google group suggest that it may be possible to run the Windows program on Linux using Wine.

Clock synchronizing is a must as the JT65 mode is very tight on timing and also frequency stability. Rod recommends Dimension 4 for Windows users.

MS Walk update

Today, April 7th, MS Walk officials gave us the go-ahead invitation to help them once again with the MS Walk communications. The date is Sunday April 17th, (Palm Sunday), at Cedarbrae Collegiate near Markham Rd. and Lawrence Ave. The Walk begins at 10:00 AM from the school lunch room. Past experience, and observation, is that the Walk begins when the people are ready to go. MS Walk officials begin their work for the Walk around 8:30 AM in the morning. Volunteers start arriving about 9:00 AM. Amateur Radio volunteers also should arrive before 9:15 AM. The Amateur Radio MS Walk volunteer sign up form is on the Scarborough Amateur Radio web site:  Please note that this has been a regular public service event for local Radio Amateurs for quite a number of years. It is a great way for us to demonstrate our willingness to help our community. It is the way that we conduct ourselves that invitations such as this return from officials repeatedly.

Yours, Bob VE3IEL

Update: see list of volunteers.
